- Lay 8 slices of bread on a work surface.
- Place 2 slices of American cheese on each of 4 of the bread slices.
- Top each with a second bread slice to form 4 sandwiches.
- Brush the top of each sandwich lightly with melted butter.
- Brush the bottom of each sandwich lightly with melted butter.
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat (about 350°F on an electric griddle).
- Place as many sandwiches as fit in a single layer in the hot skillet, working in two batches if they do not all fit.
- Grill until golden brown on the bottom, about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Flip each sandwich.
- Grill until golden brown on the second side and the cheese is melted, about 2 to 3 minutes more.
- Remove the sandwiches from the skillet.
- Cut each sandwich in half.
- Serve immediately while hot.
